Charades Wheel — Spin for Your Next Category

Charades stalls the second someone runs out of ideas or the same three categories keep coming up. The Charades Wheel fixes that by picking the category for you — Movie, Book, Song, Person, Place, or Thing — so nobody has to think one up on the spot.

How this wheel works

Charades stalls the second someone runs out of ideas or the same three categories keep coming up. The Charades Wheel fixes that by picking the category for you — Movie, Book, Song, Person, Place, or Thing — so nobody has to think one up on the spot.

Spin it before each turn, act out whatever lands, and keep the game moving. You can rename the categories, add your own, or narrow the list down to whatever fits your group's age and taste.

01

How to use this wheel

  1. 1

    Check the categories

The wheel loads with six standard charades categories already in place: Movie, Book, Song, Person, Place, and Thing.

  2. 2

    Adjust for your group

Swap out anything that doesn't fit, or add extras like TV Show or Occupation if your players want more variety.

  3. 3

    Spin before each turn

Whoever's acting spins first, gets their category, then has a set amount of time to think of something within it.

  4. 4

    Act it out

No talking, no sound effects, just gestures. The rest of the group guesses until someone gets it or time runs out.

02

Why Spin for a Charades Category

Classic charades hands each player a slip of paper with something to act out, which means someone has to sit down beforehand and write two dozen ideas across a handful of categories. Most people don't do that prep, so games either skip categories entirely or drift toward whatever the loudest person suggests every round, which gets repetitive fast once the same three ideas keep resurfacing.

The wheel replaces that setup step entirely. Instead of pre-writing prompts, you spin for a category and the actor picks something within it on the spot — a movie they've seen, a song they know, a person everyone would recognize. It puts the thinking on the person acting, which actually makes for better rounds, since they're choosing something they're confident they can perform rather than being handed a prompt they might not know well enough to act out convincingly.

It also keeps rounds from repeating. Groups without a system tend to lean on the same three or four ideas — animals, movies, maybe a TV show — because that's what comes to mind fastest under pressure. Spinning forces some variety in, since Place or Thing pushes the actor into territory they might not have picked on their own. That's usually where the funniest, weirdest attempts happen, and where charades gets genuinely memorable instead of predictable, turn after turn, party after party.

Who uses it

  • Family game nights

Mixed ages need categories that scale — Person and Movie work for kids and adults alike, while Book might trip up younger players. Trim the wheel to fit whoever's playing.

  • Classroom teachers

A quick five-minute charades round with a spun category is an easy way to fill transition time or reward a class that's earned a break, without needing to plan a full game.

  • Party hosts

Bigger groups split into teams and take turns spinning. It keeps the pace up because nobody's stuck waiting on someone to invent a prompt from scratch.

04

Pro tips

  • 01Add a difficulty twist

Once the basics get easy, add a second wheel or a die roll that decides whether the round is silent-only, one-word-clue, or teammates-guess-in-unison. It keeps repeat game nights from feeling stale.

  • 02Tailor categories to the crowd

Swap Book for Cartoon Character at a kids' party, or add Celebrity and Historical Figure for an adult group. The six default categories are a starting point, not a fixed rule.

  • 03Set a visible timer

Charades gets funnier under a bit of pressure. Sixty to ninety seconds per turn keeps things fast and stops any one round from dragging on while everyone waits.

  • 04Let the actor skip once

If someone spins a category they genuinely can't think of anything for, let them re-spin once. It keeps the game from stalling on bad luck instead of bad guessing.

Yes. Click any entry to rename it or use the plus button to add new ones like TV Show, Animal, or Celebrity. The wheel works with however many categories you want, not just the six it starts with, so feel free to build a list that matches your group's specific interests instead of sticking with the general defaults.
